An epidural lysis of adhesions is performed to decrease or eliminate scar tissue in the epidural space. Scar tissue, or adhesions, can be caused by back surgery, a tear, or inflammation. Scar tissue causes pain and can decrease the effectiveness of epidural injections. During a lysis of adhesions, X-ray is used to guide the needle to the proper place. Medication is then injected to break up scar tissue, followed by medications to decrease inflammation and pain.
