Trigger Point Injection (TPI) is a procedure used to alleviate painful muscle spasms that do not relax. The muscle spasms may irritate surrounding nerves and cause pain that is felt in another part of the body, also known as referred pain. TPIs are done when conservative treatments for muscle spasms have failed.
In the TPI procedure, an unltrasound machine is used to visualize the tissues surrounding the trigger point to ensure safety. After the skin is cleansed, a small needle will be inserted into the trigger point and a mixture of numbing medicine and corticosteroids will be injected into the site. The trigger point is then made inactive and the pain is usually alleviated.
